Professor Mantell was invited to present two talks on urban food production at international conferences held in Malaysia during 2014 and 2016. There is increasing interest in the SE Asia/Pacific countries to increase their capacity to produce fresh food within the large urban conurbations of the region. Water quality within heavily populated districts in and around cities (a combined technical, social and health safety issue), reduced availability of land for conventional growing and production of food crops and the substantial costs of property aquisition are some of the key challenges to realising this. However, there are some very good examples of where salad crops are being grown under intensive plant raising conditions in places like Singapore, Japan and China where land for growing crops conventionally is shrinking close to cities as a result of housing projects required for burgeoning human populations. Innovations are needed urgently to support particularly the intensification of plant raising and high quality crop production within buildings located close to living areas in cities.  The two cartoon presentations below are contributions by local talented Malaysian artists summarising the contents and main messages from the second talk.
